After the hegemony established by Sony’s PlayStation series in the gaming industry, it is the time for the race leader to sweat. The gaming consoles launched by Microsoft and Nintendo are competing with their product ‘chip by chip’ and what more the latest trend suggest that they are winning as well!Launched last year, Microsoft’s X-Box 360 was a phenomenal success in the gaming console market and had better features than the PS2 but Sony was counting on it’s PS3 console to win back all the converts, alas they never considered the Wii factor. Both Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s PS3 were launched in mid November and both the consoles had different USPs. Where Nintendo went for an all out World wide launch in an overtly aggressive but somewhat cocky approach, the buzzword for PS3 remained ‘QUALITY’ a promise which they delivered but short supply meant less number of devices available and this led to the success of Nintendo Wii’s success.By the end of November Wii had reportedly sold more than 600,000 Wii units and that is approximately twice the number of consoles that PS3 has sold in the same period! Now don’t jump onto any conclusions as the fact is that by the time PS3 will deliver all its orders by say the end of January the number of units sold might well be very much closer to what Nintendo has sold but as far as the initial sales are concerned Wii has piped the ‘big brother’ of online games industry. This trend only highlights the fact that the revolution started by Online Computer Games has evolved tremendously and now these ‘new age’ gaming consoles are replacing the online computer games of the past and carving out a colossal gaming market for themselves in the present electronics industry.
